Hard Times

This is dope. The Roots and John Legend compliment each other perfectly and they're coming out with a joint album later this year which is probably gonna be bonkers! Check it out.

Fantastic

Here's another undeniably beautifull Dilla orchestration cover by Miguel Atwood Ferguson & Carlos NiƱo.
There is something so special about this series that I can't quite explain. Somehow they manage to develop Jay Dee's tracks in ways that both take them to a higher level and praise the original versions, which is probably the only way you can successfully cover this guy. This is honestly a must listen. Very therapeutic.

Here's the Original Song;

I didn't care much for who won the NBA finals but I do think this is a one-of-a-kind amazing photo that exactly captures the energy of the moment so I'm gonna post it for that reason.

Man this guy is so amazingly talented. Most people know him for that 'I need a dolla' song on the show 'How to make it in America' but this dude produces sings and raps and is incredibly original and authentic. Mark my words, there are a lot of bright things in his future. {Possibly the Marvin Gaye of the 21st C}

Album Of The Year?

Is it just me or does this sound like this album is gonna blow our minds...I listened to all the previews all the way through and wanted more desperately. This sounds AMAZING. Can't wait. Drops in a week or so.

End Love

This video is just mindblowing.
Both because it's a dope video and song and because when you consider how time consuming and meticulously pre-meditated this must have been you can't help but be in Awe of all their hard work. It was made with no effects and the director claims it was one continuous shot which just adds to the ridiculousness.

Hope to make videos like this some day. Check it out!

Thank Me Later

Image

I'm conflicted about this album. On one hand, it's a solid debut from a from a fresh and very promising artist that resides leagues above most of the other tin can garbage we call Pop music nowadays. And in that sense it's a success. I mean admit it, Drake is like one of 5 artists on the radio that you don't feel like stabbing and throwing off a cliff.

On the other hand though, considering the hype behind this man that has developed this past year it's not good enough to say his album is good by today's standards; that's too low a bar to set. So I ask myself how it compares to other great debuts in Hip-Hop history. Illmatic? Naw. Reasonable Doubt? Certainly not. Get rich or die trying? Ehhh...Nah. College Dropout? Not even close. And on that basis I consider it to be a disappointment.

The production, though mostly good, is predictable, lazy and all sounds too similar if not the same. The only real standouts are 'Over' and the Kanye/Timbo tracks which all kinda feel like they should be on a better, more pre-meditated album. To add to this, drake is rapping the same quirky, twitter-status-esque lines he's been rapping all year long and has no song where he really speaks on anything memorable or significant {Save for 'Light Up' perhaps}. Even further, Jay drops the only noteworthy feature part on the album and the singy songs are really bland and unoriginal.

But like I said earlier it's a solid album by today's standards especially. Actually in a way it fulfills the expectations I had when I first discovered Drake after the 'Comeback Season' mixtape. If anything it's like a 'So Far Gone' part 2, and if he had dropped it back then I'm sure we would all be raving about how amazing Drake is and how he's gonna be the artist of the decade etc etc. But because he's developed the public image of an accomplished artist, Thank me Later is just a mediocre, unthrilling offering.

At least that's my take on it. I encourage you to decide for yourself and go pick it up even if you're the type to wear eye patches and drink copious amounts of Rum. It would actually be nice if it did really well because it would once again show Record execs that you don't have to act like a drunk-chicken jamming to kiddie piano tunes in order to be successful. So do your best to at least pick up.

These are my favorite tracks on the joint;

Drake - Show Me a Good Time

Drake Ft. Jay-Z - Light Up

This guy Asher has so much potential that he has yet to deliver on and I'm just praying that he does himself justice on his next album. This song is a really good start, definately a basis for an anthem and hopefully it'll turn into one cause it's really good.

This guy is definatly one of the more promising new rappers out right now.

His style is pretty dope because he allows for a creativity in delivery that makes his already dope lyrics even better. He recently dropped this mixtape 'MSTRD' (Pronounced Mustard) and it is really impressive, especially most of the production which I'm assuming was handled by the AMAZING Oddisee {MUST google}.

It reminds me of why I HATE this culture of labeling high quality music as mixtapes when they could easily be albums.
Sooo many good, sound compilations will be looked over in the future because they were labelled that way {think J-cole}.

Anyway check out the tracks and make sure you download the whole thing, you won't be disappointed!

This is Africa!

Image

The 2010 World cup kicked off today in the cradle of mankind and I'm feeling unexplainably pumped about it. It's funny, I'm usually a lukewarm football fan but the fact that it's in Africa has made me go a little crazy.

I am ofcourse rooting for any team that's African, but win or lose it doesn't matter. I think the more important point is that the world is coming to us, and that all eyes are on us and though so many of us are down in so many other areas of life, and our continent isn't going through the best of times, we will show them what our spirit is worth.

GO AFRICA!
